NYSERDA offers the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program to help homeowners in New York save energy and money. Like all of the NYSERDA programs it begins with a top-to-bottom look at your home to figure out which improvements will save you the most money.
To qualify for a free or reduced comprehensive home assessment you must:
- Own the 1- to 4-unit residential building
- Have not previously received a free/reduced-cost assessment
- Have a total household income at or below 200 percent Area Median Income (FREE)

It is also really simple to determine if your home energy audit will be free. All you have to know is your household income and verify with the list below based on the county where you live
2014 NYSERDA Household Income Guides to Free Home Energy Assessments
- If you live in Columbia County , NY and your household income is less than $148,000 then the home energy audit is free.
- If you live in Delaware County, NY and your household income is less than $115,000 then the home energy audit is free.
- If you live in Dutchess County, NY and your household income is less than $166,200 then the home energy audit is free.
- If you live in Green County, NY and your household income is less than $116,800 then the home energy audit is free.
- If you live in Orange County, NY and your household income is less than $166,200 then the home energy audit is free.
- If you live in Putnam County, NY and you household income is less than $125,000 then the home energy audit is free.
- If you live in Rockland County, NY and you household income is less than $200,400 then the home energy audit is free.
- If you live in Sullivan County, NY and you household income is less than $126,400 then the home energy audit is free.
- If you live in Ulster County, NY and you household income is less than $142,600 then the home energy audit is free.
- If you live in Westchester County, NY and you household income is less than $207,400 then the home energy audit is free.
What Happens After You Apply for the Home Energy Assessment?
Once you submit your application, here’s what you can expect:
- It will take NYSERDA 3-5 days to approve your application. They may contact you for additional information.
- NYSERDA will send you an Approval Letter and Reservation Number via email or US mail to schedule your assessment. The reservation number is 8 characters long (3 letters, 5 numbers).
